Te Nukuroa o Matamata restoration project, led by Te Rūnaka o Ōtākou, is working to restore habitats and rejuvenate mahika kai in the lower Taiari catchment.
The catchment area is a haven for many threatened and endangered taonga species of plant, fish and birds here in Aotearoa. The catchment area covers the Waihora/Waipōuri Wetland complex, encompassing the Taiari and Waipōuri rivers and lakes.
Traditionally, Waitaha, Kāti Mamoe and Kāi Tahu, across many generations, made use of this area as an important mahika kai resource. And restoring and preserving this area for future generations is of utmost importance to the Ōtākou hapori.
